Gaura Purnima 2011

March 28th, 2011 | No Comments

A torrential downpour rained from the skies for this year’s observation of Vyasa-puja and Gaura-purnima, but the deluge was unable to dampen the spirits of those who assembled for the festivities. Devotees prepared wonderful feasts for Sri Guru and Gauranga, performed an ecstatic abhiseka and kirtanas, and offered Swami Tripurari generous gifts and heartfelt written offerings. The joyous conclusion of the festival was an initiation of three devotees: Govinda Rama dasa, Kalachandji dasi, and Kanu-priya dasi.

For the past eight years, Swami has spoken about one of the verses of Gurvastakam, and this year he reached the end of the Astakam: the phala-stuti. He stressed that if you are after the ideal of experiential reality getting more blissful at every moment, then the Braja-lila is the place to go. Not only that, but the journey to perfection is itself blissful: to be in touch with sad-guru is a celebration and to actually understand this truth will bring tears to your eyes.

On Gaura-purnima, Swami Tripurari spoke eloquently about Krsnadasa Kaviraja Goswami, the author of Caitanya-caritamrta, who has given us Mahaprabhu and his teachings. Swami explained the subtlety of Krsnadasa Kaviraja Goswami’s argument in relation to jnana, yoga, and bhakti, showing how Krsnadasa reveals bhakti as the topmost attainment.

In the evening, Swami Tripurari churned the topic of Mahaprabhu’s sannyasa. He explained how the greatest pain is separation from a devotee and how the residents of Navadwipa accepted this pain for the sake of para-upakara (pursuing the highest welfare of all living beings). Explaining how Mother Yasoda is so attached to Krishna that it is extremely difficult for her to let him leave for the pasture every day, Swami pointed out how much harder it was for Saci to let him go for good when he took sannyasa. Swami stressed that we should also be willing to embrace the pain of sacrifice for the sake of preaching and that this will actually bring us closer to Mahaprabhu.
